6 Easy October Activities for Kindergarten and Primary Students
Looking for easy October activities for Kindergarten and primary students? These simple, low-prep ideas include Halloween activities, pumpkins, fall science, online safety and more.
October is one of my favourite months for adding seasonal activities into regular classroom and library routines.
Between pumpkins, Halloween, fall science and important topics like fire and online safety, there are so many easy ways to make your lessons feel a little more seasonal without completely changing what you’re already teaching.
Here are six simple October activity ideas for Kindergarten through Grade 3.
1. Add Some Halloween Fun to Centers 🎃
Halloween activities don’t have to take over your entire day!
A simple seasonal center or early-finisher activity is an easy way to bring some Halloween excitement into the classroom while students are still practicing familiar skills.
My Halloween Look & Find is a print-and-go activity that students can complete independently. It works well for morning work, library centers, early finishers, or a quiet activity during a busy October week.
For a literacy option, my new Halloween Vocabulary + Write the Room Activity gets students moving around the room while reading and recording Halloween vocabulary.
You can also grab the Fall + Halloween Look & Find Bundle if you want activities that will work throughout the whole season.
2. Use Pumpkins for an Easy Literacy Activity
Pumpkins are perfect for October because you can use the same theme for reading, writing, vocabulary, science and even coding.
For a simple literacy center, post pumpkin vocabulary cards around the classroom and have students find and record each word.
My Pumpkin Vocabulary + Write the Room Activity includes seasonal vocabulary cards and a recording sheet, so it’s an easy activity to set up and use throughout October.
If you use coding robots, you can even carry the same vocabulary into a STEM center with my Pumpkin Coding Cards for Bee-Bot. Students practice coding while matching pumpkin-themed pictures and vocabulary.
3. Turn Pumpkin Carving into a Writing Lesson
October is also the perfect time to practice procedural or how-to writing.
Instead of another generic writing prompt, have students think through the steps involved in carving a pumpkin. Students can discuss the supplies they would need, put the steps in order, and then write their own instructions.
My How to Carve a Pumpkin Writing Activity gives students a visual Google Slides template that they can use to practice sequencing and procedural writing.
There is also a larger set with How to Carve a Pumpkin, How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds, and How to Make Pumpkin Pie if you want to extend the activity into several fall writing lessons.
4. Explore Pumpkin, Bat and Spider Life Cycles 🕷️
October is a great time to bring seasonal themes into your science lessons.
Pumpkins are an easy way to introduce or review plant life cycles. My Pumpkin Life Cycle Lesson includes a visual Google Slides lesson, comprehension questions, and printable activities for young learners.
As Halloween gets closer, switch over to bats and spiders!
My Bat Life Cycle and Spider Life Cycle resources both include simple visual lessons and printable follow-up activities.
5. Fit in an Important Fire Safety Lesson 🔥
October is a great time to review fire safety, especially around Fire Prevention Week.
Keep the lesson simple for younger students by focusing on a few important ideas, such as knowing how to respond to a smoke alarm, leaving a building safely, and knowing when to ask an adult for help.
My Fire Safety Lesson and Worksheets includes ready-to-use Google Slides and printable activities designed for primary students.
If you teach safety topics throughout the year, both are also included alongside my other safety lessons in the Safety Lessons Bundle.
6. Review Online Safety During October 💻
October is also Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it a natural time to revisit online safety and digital citizenship.
For primary students, this doesn’t need to be complicated. Talk about simple ideas such as keeping personal information private, asking an adult before clicking something unfamiliar, and making safe choices when using devices.
My Online Safety + Cyber Safety Lesson includes Google Slides, discussion prompts, and differentiated printable worksheets designed for young learners.
This is another resource included in my larger Safety Lessons Bundle, which makes it easy to revisit different safety topics throughout the school year.

Keep October Activities Simple
October can be a busy month, so seasonal activities don’t need to mean creating completely new lessons.
A Halloween center, pumpkin writing activity, fall science lesson, or quick safety review can add a little seasonal fun while still covering the skills and topics you already need to teach.
Hopefully these ideas make your October planning just a little easier!
Happy teaching!
